  • Describing your home

Talking about your home is a common topic in writing and speaking exams. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to describe a house or flat (also called an apartment in American English) using adjectives, connectors, and useful words to talk about its rooms, location, and surroundings.

When you describe your home, you can talk about:

    ‣ what type of place it is and where it’s located
    ‣ what it looks like inside and outside
    ‣ what the neighbourhood is like
    ‣ who might enjoy living there

    Plan your paragraphs

When you have some ideas about your home, it’s time to organise them. You can write your description in four short paragraphs:

    Paragraph 1 – Introduction

Say what kind of home it is and where it’s located. Mention the type (flat, detached house, two-storey house, etc.) and whether it’s in the city, countryside, or near the sea.

    Example:
I live in a spacious two-storey house in a quiet area near the centre of Bristol. It’s in a great location, close to shops, cafés, and public transport.

Paragraph 2 – Inside the house or flat

Describe the main rooms and any special features. Use adjectives to make your description more interesting.

    Example:
The house has four bedrooms, a cosy living room, and a large kitchen. There’s also a small study where I work, a playroom for the children, and a utility room next to the kitchen. Upstairs, we have a bright landing that leads to the bedrooms and the attic. The house is fully furnished and in good condition. Outside, there’s a patio and a shed where we keep our tools.

    Paragraph 3 – The neighbourhood

Describe the surroundings and what it’s like to live there.

    Example:
The neighbourhood is friendly and peaceful, with plenty of parks and shops nearby. It’s within walking distance of a supermarket and a bus stop, and the city centre is only ten minutes away. It’s a very convenient area for families.

    Paragraph 4 – Suitability

Explain who the home is suitable for and why someone might like to live there.

    Example:
This house is perfect for a family who needs a lot of space and comfort. It feels cosy and light, and it’s in a great location. It would also suit people who enjoy DIY projects, as there’s a basement that could be renovated in the future.
