    Choose the correct option to complete each sentence.

    1I going to visit my grandparents on Saturday.

  • My weekend plans

    In this lesson, you will write about your weekend plans. You will learn how to use be going to to talk about future plans, and also useful words and expressions.

    When you talk about your plans, you can answer these questions:

    ‣ What are you going to do this weekend?

    • I’m going to do some shopping, I’m going to go out, etc.

    ‣ When are you going to do it?

    • On Saturday evening, on Sunday morning, etc.

    ‣ Who are you going to do it with?

    • With my friends, with my boyfriend, with my children, etc.

    ‣ Where are you going to do it?

    • At the shopping centre, in the park, etc. 

    Be going to

    We use be going to to talk about future intentions and plans. Check this example:

    • I‘m going to watch a film.

    This means I decided to watch a film some time before saying the sentence.

    We can also use be going to to make predictions. For example, when we talk about weekend activities, we can say:

    • It‘s going to be fun/great/relaxing.

    Form

    Be going to is formed with the verb be (am/is/are) + going to + a verb (cook, read, visit, etc.).

    Subject Verb be + going to Base verb
    I am going to cook dinner
    You / We / They are going to read a book
    He / She / It is going to visit friends

    Time expressions for weekend plans

    When you talk about your plans, use the prepositions of time at, in, on to say when things are going to happen.

    ‣ on + day: on Friday, on Saturday, on Sunday
    ‣ on + part of a specific day: on Friday evening, on Saturday morning, on Sunday afternoon
    ‣ in + parts of the day: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening (❗But we say ‘at night’).
    ‣ at + time: at 7 o’clock, at 6:30 pm 

    We can put these time expressions at the beginning or the end of the sentence.

    • On Saturday morning, I’m going to play football with my friends.
    • I’m going to meet my friends at 7 o’clock.
    • We’re going to visit my grandparents in the afternoon.

    Sequence words

    Use sequence words to show the order of your activities.

    ‣ First: for the first activity
    ‣ Then: for the next one
    ‣ After that or Next: for the next activity
    ‣ Finally: for the last activity

    These words make your text clearer and easier to read.

    • On Saturday morning, I’m going to clean my room and do some homework. Then, I’m going to walk my dog in the park. After that, I’m going to go shopping.

    Useful language and vocabulary

    Here are some common weekend activities:

    ‣ Sports and outdoor activities: play football, go for a walk, go for a run, ride my bike, go to the park
    ‣ Social activities: visit friends, meet friends, visit family, have lunch out, have a picnic
    ‣ Home activities: help at home, tidy my room, relax at home, listen to music, play video games, walk the dog
    ‣ Other activities: study, do homework, watch a film, read a book, go shopping

    You can use these phrases with be going to to talk about your plans. For example:

    • I’m going to play football.
    • We’re going to visit my grandparents.
    • My friends are going to go shopping.

    Organising your writing

    When you write about your weekend plans, organise your ideas into four short parts:

    1. Introduction: Say something general about your weekend.
    2. Saturday paragraph: Write 2–3 sentences about your plans for Saturday.
    3. Sunday paragraph: Write 2–3 sentences about your plans for Sunday.
    4. Conclusion: Finish your text with one sentence.

    Sample text

    This weekend is going to be very busy.

    On Saturday, I‘m going to wake up very early in the morning. First, I‘m going to have a shower and get ready. Then, I‘m going to do some work. After that, I‘m going to meet my friend for lunch at 1 pm. In the afternoon, I‘m going to visit my mum, and we are going to have dinner together. Finally, I am going to go home and watch a film.

    On Sunday morning, I‘m going to get up late and have a big breakfast. Then, I‘m going to go for a walk with my family. We love going to the park with our dogs. After that, we‘re going to visit my grandparents. In the evening, I‘m going to relax at home and read a book.
