Basic phrasal verbs
In this A1 Elementary Vocabulary Lesson on Phrasal Verbs, you will learn some very common everyday phrasal verbs. Check the pictures and read the definitions and examples below.

1 When you come back, you return to the place you were before.- He went to the shop and came back with bread.
2 When you come in, you enter a room or building.
- The teacher said, ‘Come in!’
3 When you get in/into a car, taxi, etc., you enter it.
- We got in the taxi.
4 When you get out, you leave a car, taxi, or building.
- We got out of the taxi at the park.
5 When you get on, you enter a bus, train, or plane.
- Many people got on the bus.
6 When you get off, you leave a bus, train, or plane.
- We got off the bus at the station.
7 When you go up, you move higher, for example on stairs or a hill.
- We went up the hill slowly.
8 When you go down, you move lower, for example on stairs or a hill.
- The children went down the stairs.
9 When you go in, you enter a place.
- She went in the shop to buy milk.
10 When you go out, you leave a room or building.
- I want to go out for a walk.
11 When you go away, you leave a place.
- She is going to go away for the weekend.
12 When you go back, you return to the place you were before.
- It’s late. We must go back home.
13 When you hurry up, you go faster because there is not much time.
- Hurry up or we’ll miss the bus!
14 When you sit down, you go from standing to sitting on a chair, sofa, or bench.
- Please sit down on the chair.
15 When you stand up, you go from sitting to standing on your feet.
- The teacher asked the boy to stand up.
16 When you wake up, you stop sleeping.
- I usually wake up at seven o’clock.
