  • Essay about ‘My Neighbourhood’

    When you write about your neighbourhood, it’s important to describe what’s there, where things are, and what you like or don’t like. This lesson will help you use simple grammar and vocabulary to write clearly about your neighbourhood.

    There is, There are

    When you describe the things in or near your neighbourhood, use there is, and there are.

    Use There is, or the short form There’s with singular nouns. The negative form is There isn’t. Use a before the singular noun.

    • There is a pharmacy near my house.
    • There’s a park near the school.
    • There isn’t a shopping mall in my neighbourhood.

    Use There are with plural nouns. We can use a number, some, a few or a lot of before the nouns:

    • There are some small shops in my neighbourhood.
    • There are a few cafés on the main street.
    • There are a lot of parks near my home.

    In negative sentences, we use any, not some.

    • There aren’t any clothes shops.

    And, with, but

    You can use and to connect places in the neighbourhood.

    • There’s a supermarket and a grocery store in my street. 
    • There is a food market and a few shops near my house. 

    You can use with to say what things are in a place.

    • There is a park with a nice lake and some trees. 

    You can use but to show contrast between things that there are and things that there aren’t.

    • There are some grocery stores, but there aren’t any supermarkets.
    • There is a park in my neighbourhood, but there isn’t a playground.

    Has / Has got

    You can also use has or has got to give more information about something in your neighbourhood.

    • The park has a lake, but it doesn’t have a playground.

    Locations

    You can use words like north, east, south, west, and centre to describe where things are located in or outside the town or neighbourhood. Below are examples and helpful phrases to use.

    Inside the neighbourhood

    Use these phrases to describe locations within the town or neighbourhood:

    • There’s a library in the centre/north/east/south/west of the neighbourhood.
    • There’s a grocery store on the north/east/south/west side of the town.

    Note the prepositions in the … of and on the … side of.

    Outside the neighbourhood

    Use this phrase to talk about locations outside the town or neighbourhood:

    • There’s an airport north/east/south/west of the neighbourhood.

    Prepositions of place

    Use these prepositions to give more detail about the location of places.

    • There’s a bookshop near the school.
    • There’s a pharmacy next to the health centre.
    • There’s a small park between the library and the supermarket
    • There’s a park behind the supermarket.

    Useful adjectives

    Here are some adjectives to describe different parts of a neighbourhood. Use them to make your writing more interesting:

    • The town is: small, friendly, big, busy
    • The supermarket is: convenient, good, great, useful, big, small
    • The public transport is: convenient, good, bad, poor
    • The park is: pretty, nice
    • The views are: great, wonderful
    • The traffic is: slow, bad

    What you like or don’t like

    When you write about your neighbourhood, it’s good to include what you like or don’t like about it. This makes your writing more personal and interesting.

    • I like going to the library because I can read books and newspapers there.
    • I don’t like the traffic near my house because it’s always very slow.
    • There’s a park in my neighbourhood, and I like walking there in the mornings.

    Example essay

    My Neighbourhood

    I live in a small, friendly neighbourhood. It has everything I need. There is a park near my house, and I like walking there in the mornings. The park is pretty, and it has a lake, but it doesn’t have a playground. There are some small shops in the centre of the neighbourhood. For example, there’s a bakery, a pharmacy, and a grocery store, but there isn’t a big supermarket.

    >My neighbourhood also has a library. The library is in the north of the town, opposite a small café. I like the café because it’s very convenient. There are a few schools, too. There’s a primary school in the south of the neighbourhood, but there isn’t a secondary school.

    One bad thing about my neighbourhood is the traffic. The traffic is slow, and there aren’t many bus stops, but the views are great. I like my neighbourhood because it’s quiet and nice!
