    1 Travel is usually a verb, but it can also be a noun. As a verb, to travel means to go from one place to another. As a noun, travel is uncountable and refers to the general activity of travelling.

    • Air travel is expensive these days, so we tend to go everywhere by car.

    2 A trip is always a noun, and it refers to the act of going on a visit to a place for a short time and returning.

    • We are planning a trip to London to visit my uncle in the spring.

    3 A journey is the act of travelling from one place to another, so one trip implies two journeys.

    • We were all tired after our long journey.

    4 A voyage is a journey that you take in a boat or on a ship.

    • The voyage across the ocean took just over two weeks.

    5 Your destination is the place you intend to reach at the end of a journey or voyage.

    • It took us nearly two days to reach our destination.

    6 The route is the path you take to get from your starting point to your destination.

    • We took a different route because the road we usually go on was closed.

    7 A tour is a trip where you visit different places in a specific area.

    • Our tour of the pyramids was great; our guide was fantastic.

    8 A road trip is a long journey that you make in a car or a bus.

    • Now that I have a car, I plan on taking a road trip to Scotland.

    9 A business trip is a short trip that you make for work or business purposes.

    • My job involves a lot of business trips, many of which are overseas.

    10 A pleasure trip is a trip that you take for personal enjoyment.

    • Unfortunately, this is not a pleasure trip, as I’ll be attending meetings every day.

    11 A staycation is a holiday that you take in your own country instead of abroad.

    • My husband doesn’t enjoy flying, so our holidays are usually staycations in the countryside.

    12 A city break is a short holiday in which you visit another city.

    • My girlfriend and I are planning a city break to Amsterdam next weekend.

    13 Backpacking is the act of travelling with your possessions in a bag on your back.

    14 A pilgrimage is a journey that you make for religious purposes, usually to a sacred place.
