    The business of running

Once classed as a sport for the introverted or the fitness fanatics, running has become one of the most popular sports worldwide over time. This simple yet effective form of exercise attracts millions of people every year. This is not surprising, as many feel that running surpasses all other sports and that it helps them feel calm and balanced. All in all, the majority of runners agree that nowadays, it is more important than ever to find convenient ways to exercise, and running is just the solution. Alongside its popularity, the business around running has grown exponentially, and it’s generating massive profits, although the sport itself is probably the most inexpensive to practise.

One of the main running-related sources of income is organising races. Many cities host annual marathons, half-marathons, and 5K runs. These events attract thousands of participants who are charged entry fees. Companies that trade in healthy food and sports equipment are keen to sponsor races because they know that the participants are likely to be interested in their products. Additionally, races often sell branded T-shirts, medals, and other souvenirs to the spectators who attend the competitions.

The sale of sports gear is another booming aspect of the running business. Running shoes are the one item that runners can’t do without. Big sports brands invest heavily in research and development to create shoes that enhance performance and prevent injuries. These companies also market and advertise their products aggressively, and a good pair of running shoes can cost anywhere from $50 to $250. Runners purchase not only shoes but also special clothing that make running more comfortable. Wearable technology, like fitness trackers and smartwatches, has become the latest trend among runners.

Nutrition products play a crucial role in the business of running. Athletes need to fuel their bodies properly to perform well and recover quickly. Energy gels, protein bars, and electrolyte drinks are just some of the products created specifically for sports people. Some companies claim to specialise in products specifically for runners, but their positive effects haven’t been proven yet. These products are often sold at sporting goods stores and online, making them easily accessible to runners around the world.

Social media has also contributed to the growth of the running business. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook allow runners to share their experiences, join virtual running groups, and participate in online challenges. In this way, running goes beyond individual achievement, and it becomes a means to provide support and encouragement to like-minded people worldwide. On the business side of things, influencers and professional runners often promote products which are then purchased by their followers for a commission.

With many gyms closed during the pandemic, many people turned to running as a way to keep fit and to avoid boredom. Such great interest for this sport was expected to fade away once life returned to normal. Surprisingly, almost 30% of those who took up running in 2020 have kept going, often upgrading from amateur runs around the park to participating in organised events. As a result, many marathons have sold out, leaving many runners without an event to attend.
