  • Writing an advantages and disadvantages essay

In this lesson, you will learn how to write an advantages and disadvantages essay. You will practise organising your ideas into clear paragraphs and using linking words to show contrast and give your opinion.

    Organise your text

When you write an advantages and disadvantages essay, you should:

    • introduce the topic clearly
    • describe both the advantages and the disadvantages
    • finish with your own opinion
💡 You can organise your advantages and disadvantages essay into four paragraphs:

    1️⃣ Introduction
    2️⃣ Advantages
    3️⃣ Disadvantages
    4️⃣ Conclusion

Let’s look at each part in detail.

    Paragraph 1 – Introduction

Introduce the topic with a general statement and say what the essay will discuss. Do not give your opinion yet. You can start with a general idea, a question, or a common opinion.

Nowadays, more and more people are thinking about living in a smaller, quieter place. Living in a small town instead of in a big city has both advantages and disadvantages.

    Paragraph 2 – Advantages

Write about two or three advantages of living in a small town. Use connectors to organise your ideas and give examples or explanations to support your points.

Firstly, one of the main benefits of living in a small town is that life is usually quieter and less stressful. Another advantage is that people know each other better, and there is a stronger sense of community. For example, it is often easier to make friends, and it may be safer for children to play outside.

The paragraph starts with a clear connector (‘Firstly’) and introduces the first advantage. Then, the writer adds another positive point and gives an example to explain it.

    Paragraph 3 – Disadvantages

Write about two or three disadvantages of living in a small town. Use contrasting connectors to introduce the negative side and explain your ideas with examples.

On the other hand, living in a small town also has some drawbacks. One problem is that there are often fewer job opportunities than in a big city. Another disadvantage is that public transport is usually more limited, and there are fewer services and not many things to do. As a result, you may have to go to the city to see a doctor, go shopping, or eat out.

The writer uses ‘However’ to introduce the disadvantages. Then, they mention two negative points and explain the possible result of these problems.

    Paragraph 4 – Conclusion

Summarise the main points of your essay and give your opinion. Do not introduce any new ideas in this paragraph.

To sum up, living in a small town can be a positive experience because it is quieter and more peaceful. However, it can also be less convenient than living in a big city. In my opinion, it may be a better place to live if you have children and prefer a calm lifestyle.

The writer uses a concluding phrase (‘To sum up’) to summarise the topic and then gives a clear personal opinion.
