Until vs By
Many students confuse until and by. Both talk about time, but they mean different things. Let’s see how to use them correctly.

Until
We use until to talk about duration: how long something continues. The word until introduces the moment when an action or situation stops. For example:
- I studied at the library until 8 o’clock.
This sentence means that you started studying at the library before 8, and the action continued up to 8 o’clock. So until introduces the time when an action or situation stops. Here are a few more examples:
- She lived in London until 2020. (She lived in London for some time and stopped living there in 2020.)
- Wait here until I come back. (Keep waiting, and stop when I return.)
So, until is about duration — the action or situation continues up to the time or event mentioned after until.
By
We use by to talk about a deadline: the latest time when something must be finished or happen. The word by introduces this deadline. For example:
- I need to finish my homework by 8 o’clock.
This sentence means you must finish your homework at 8 o’clock or any time before that. It can be finished at any time before 8 (for example, at 3, 5, or 6) but not after 8. Here are a few more examples:
- Please send me the report by Friday. (Friday is the last day you can send it.)
- You must be at the station by 6 p.m. (Arrive at 6, or any time before 6, but not after that time.)
So, by is about a deadline — something must happen before or at the time mentioned after by.
Summary
Use until to talk about how long something continues.
- I waited until 6 o’clock.
Use by to talk about when something must happen (the deadline).
- Please call me by 6 o’clock.
